The printed publishing of a work, in many cases, happened ca. 5 or even 10 years after its real composition and/or its premiere. Many dates of orchestral or chamber music are determined only by the advertising system of that period. The dating you find in this Almanac tries to represent the most accurate conclusions established by scholars. |

HAYDN (JOSEPH)
[A] [see Carpani's 1812 Gran Gallery No. 1] • Overtures 1774 • Hob.Ia:2 Il Ritorno di Tobia [C-M] (1774) • Symphonies 1774 Haydn's Symphonies from 1774 are among the most important ones, since they represent a fundamental point of style definition both in music writing and richer instrumentation. • Hob.I:50 Symphony [C-M] (1773-74) • Hob.I:54 Symphony [G-M] (1774) • Hob.I:55 Symphony Schoolmaster [Eb-M] (1774) • Hob.I:56 Symphony [C-M] (1774) • Hob.I:57 Symphony [D-M] (1774) • Hob.I:60 Symphony [C-M] (1774) • Hob.I:66 Symphony [Bb-M] (1774-76) • Hob.I:67 Symphony [F-M] (1774-79) • Hob.I:68 Symphony [Bb-M] (1774-79) • Incidental Music 1774 • Hob.30:2 Musik zum Schauspiel Die Feuersbrunst (1774 or 1776? or 1778?) LOST(?) More than incidental musik, it should be a Marionette Singspiel with dialogues. For this work it exists a score discovered in 1935, the authenticity of which is still highly debated. Moreover it's not sure if the music was really intended for this Die Feuersbrunst, in particular, or for another (similar?) libretto (we don't have). Even the composer of the score is not sure: Haydn or a revision by Haydn of someone else's music? We know that Pleyel, the pupil of Haydn, wrote some music for this work and/or even completed the instrumentation. Even the dating is uncertain: 1774 or 1776 or 1778, based on speculation. • Hob.30:3 Zwischenaktmusik zum Schauspiel Der Zerstreute (lost, 1774) • Keyboard Music 1774 • Hob.XVI:27 Keyboard Sonata No.42 or IMSLP No.27 [G-M] (ca 1774-76) • Hob.XVI:28 Keyboard Sonata No.43 or IMSLP No.28 [Eb-M] (ca 1774-76) • Hob.XVI:29 Keyboard Sonata No.44 or IMSLP No.29 [F-M] (ca 1774-76) • Hob.XVI:30 Keyboard Sonata No.45 or IMSLP No.30 [A-M] (ca 1774-76) • Hob.XVI:31 Keyboard Sonata No.46 or IMSLP No.31 [E-M] (ca 1774-76) • Hob.XVI:32 Keyboard Sonata No.47 or IMSLP No.32 [B-m] (ca 1774-76) • Hob.XVII:3 Variations in E b major [Eb-M] (1774 or before) • Chamber Music 1774 From Hob.XI:97 to Hob.XI:126 we have 30 Trii for Baryton, Viola, Cello of uncertain dating from 1772 to 1778: only Hob.XI:105 was certainly written in 1772. ________________ |

BAUMGÄRTNER
[G] • Instructions de musique à l'usage du violoncello (1774) The great success of the Italian modern violoncello began only during the first years of the 18th century and J.S.Bach had his role in promoting this rather new instrument (See E. Klorman LINK). Baumgärtner as a German cellist travelled across Europe in concert tours from 1768 to ca. 1776. In 1776 he became foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. ________________ |
GERBERT
[G] • De cantu et musica sacra - Vol. 1 (1774) • De cantu et musica sacra - Vol. 2 (1774) • De cantu et musica sacra - Vol. 2: Missa in Coena Domini (1774) Gerbert was a close friend of Gluck. Gerbert belonged to the aristocracy (Gerbert von Hornau) and was a German theologian, historian and writer on music. ________________ |
HILLER
[G] [the same Hiller at E] • Anweisung zum musikalisch-richtigen Gesange (1774) • Exempel-Buch der Anweisung zum Singen (1774) Typical books by Hiller as public educator of the German people, in order to refine their music taste and preparation. Nonetheless, these books are also important documents of the 18th-century musical practice. ________________ |
LAAG
[G] • Anfangsgründe zum Clavierspielen und Generalbas (1774) Laag was also a composer of Lieder. ________________ |
LÖHLEIN
[G] • Anweisung zum Vionlinspielen (1774) Löhlein's manual was thought as an integration to Leopold Mozart's most famous Violin manual (1756). Reichardt took care of the new editions of Löhlein's after 1774. Löhlein was a German pianist, violinist, music teacher, conductor and composer. ________________ |
MANCINI
[G] • Pensieri e riflessioni pratiche sopra il canto figurato (1774) Mancini published his major manual on singing in Vienna in 1774. Pupil of two most important teachers Leonardo Leo and Giovanni Battista Martini, he became so famous both as a singer and as a teacher that in 1757 Vienna Imperial Court called him to work in Austria, where he became Court Singing Master and remained there for the rest of his life. The great importance of his 1774 manual on singing can be understood through the number of edition published. Already in 1777 his manual reached the 3rd edition (augmented), and it was reprinted and translated in the 20th century (1912 and 1967). His great adversary as a singing teacher was Vincenzo Manfredini. Mancini was an Italian soprano, castrato, singing teacher and writer of books on vocal techniques. ________________ |

MARTINI
[G] [see: Impossible Interview: Padre Martini October 2017] • Esemplare, o sia Saggio fondamentale pratico di contrappunto - Vol. 1 (1774) • Esemplare, o sia Saggio fondamentale pratico di contrappunto - Vol. 2 (1774) The importance of Giovanni Battista Martini (Bologna) needs no presentation: his nickname was The Maestro dei Maestri. Entire generations of composers studied with him in Bologna, before starting a successful career across Europe: J.C. Bach, Mozart, Jommelli († 1774/08/25), Gassmann († 1774/01/20) (only to name the most famous ones). His school in Bologna (led by his pupil Stanislao Mattei, after his death) prepared Rossini, Donizetti, and the ancestors of Puccini. ________________ |

REICHARDT
[G] [the same Reichardt at B] • Briefe eines aufmerksamen Reisenden die Musik betreffend - Vol. 1 (1774) • Briefe eines aufmerksamen Reisenden die Musik betreffend - Vol. 2 (1776) This books by Reichardt are of great importance, because they represent the history and the world of music as seen from Berlin. They were written, with the intention to be the German answer to the Burney's English books (1773), which disparaged the Berlin school of music. The Briefe are an important document on the theory, history and practice of music in Europe in the 18th century. The English translation of the 2 books is available at this address: • Reichardt's Briefe Vol.1+Vol.2 English Translation ________________ |
